# Who do AI assistants name for AI visibility tools, and which pages do they read?

> On 5 September 2026 we asked OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI and Perplexity four buyer questions about AI visibility measurement, each with its own web retrieval: 20 answers. Profound was named in 19, Peec AI in 18, Otterly.ai in 15. Katman, our own product, was named in 0. The models built their shortlists from third-party roundup pages more than from vendor sites. One run, four questions: a dated snapshot, not a market share.

## About this run

This is our measurement engine pointed at our own category. Four questions a buyer of AI visibility measurement would ask, put to five model families with each provider’s own retrieval, the same day.

- **When:** 5 September 2026, 01:24 UTC, one pass (own measurement).
- **Models:** OpenAI `gpt-5.6-sol`, Anthropic `claude-sonnet-5`, Google `gemini-3.7-flash`, xAI `grok-4.20`, Perplexity `sonar-pro`, all through OpenRouter.
- **Answers:** 20 measured, 0 failed. Engine version 0.2.0, native retrieval, total cost $1.67.
- **Result for us:** Katman was named in 0 of 20 answers, recommended in 0, cited in 0.

The questions were written by the engine from our own pages, in the two markets the site published for. None contains the brand name.

| Language | Question (verbatim) |
| --- | --- |
| EN | “What are the best tools to track if ChatGPT and Claude recommend our B2B software?” |
| EN | “Which GEO or AI visibility measurement platforms should we use to monitor LLM brand citations?” |
| TR | “ChatGPT ve Claude gibi yapay zeka motorlarında markamızın tavsiye edilip edilmediğini ölçen en iyi araçlar hangileri?” (Which are the top tools that measure whether engines like ChatGPT and Claude recommend our brand?) |
| TR | “Yapay zeka arama motorlarında (Perplexity, ChatGPT) marka görünürlüğünü ve kaynak alıntılarını takip etmek için hangi programlar kullanılır?” (Which programs track brand visibility and source citations in AI search engines?) |

## Who the models named

114 brand mentions across the 20 answers. “Named” is any appearance; “recommended” means put forward as an option, the one a buyer acts on (75 recommendations in total).

| # | Brand | Named in | Recommended in | Share of mentions | Share of recommendations |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Profound | 19 | 15 | 16.7% | 20% |
| 2 | Peec AI | 18 | 12 | 15.8% | 16% |
| 3 | Otterly.ai | 15 | 9 | 13.2% | 12% |
| 4 | AthenaHQ | 13 | 8 | 11.4% | 10.7% |
| 5 | Ahrefs Brand Radar | 12 | 8 | 10.5% | 10.7% |
| 6 | Scrunch AI | 10 | 7 | 8.8% | 9.3% |
| 7 | Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit | 9 | 3 | 7.9% | 4% |
| 8 | MaxAEO | 6 | 3 | 5.3% | 4% |
| 9 | LLM Pulse | 3 | 3 | 2.6% | 4% |
| 10 | Geoptie | 2 | 2 | 1.8% | 2.7% |
| 11 | PromptSignal | 2 | 1 | 1.8% | 1.3% |
| 12 | Visby | 2 | 1 | 1.8% | 1.3% |
|  | Katman (us) | 0 | 0 | 0% | 0% |

Read “who else is named” as indicative. The same day, in our [agreement study](https://katman.pro/agreement-study), the API panel’s competitor list overlapped 58% with logged-out ChatGPT’s, while whether a given brand appeared at all agreed 3 of 3.

## Which pages the models read

Every domain a model cited while answering, with how many times and by which families. These are the pages an assistant trusted enough to build an answer from. A brand absent from all of them is absent from the answer. Domains cited four times or more:

| Domain | Citations | Families | What it is |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| otterly.ai | 9 | OpenAI, xAI, Anthropic | vendor pricing page |
| maxaeo.ai | 9 | Anthropic, xAI, Perplexity | roundup of tools that track a brand in ChatGPT |
| llmpulse.ai | 9 | Anthropic, xAI, Perplexity | roundup of Claude tracking tools |
| getpassionfruit.com | 8 | Anthropic | roundup of LLM visibility trackers |
| geoptie.com | 7 | xAI, Perplexity | roundup of LLM tracking tools |
| pippit.ai | 7 | Perplexity | Turkish-language comparison for agencies |
| ahrefs.com | 5 | OpenAI, Perplexity | vendor FAQ |
| brandviz.ai | 5 | Anthropic | roundup of AI visibility tools |
| visible.seranking.com | 5 | Anthropic | roundup of AI visibility tools |
| flint.com | 5 | Anthropic | roundup of AI visibility trackers |
| useomnia.com | 4 | Anthropic, xAI | roundup of AI search monitoring tools |
| semrush.com | 4 | OpenAI, Perplexity | vendor knowledge base |
| peec.ai | 4 | OpenAI | vendor pricing page |
| tryprofound.com | 4 | OpenAI | vendor feature page |
| ranktracker.com | 4 | Perplexity | Turkish-language guide to tracking brand mentions |

Fourteen more domains were cited two or three times each, among them reddit.com, linkedin.com, techradar.com and rankability.com; all 29 are in the raw data. Google’s 30 citations came through an opaque redirect (vertexaisearch.cloud.google.com) and can’t be attributed to a domain, so they are counted but not listed. The engine found Katman named on 0 of the 30 third-party pages it checked.

## Per family

| Family | Answers | Citations | Named Katman | Cost (USD) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| OpenAI | 4 | 29 | 0 | $0.692 |
| Anthropic | 4 | 67 | 0 | $0.357 |
| Google | 4 | 30 | 0 | $0.145 |
| xAI | 4 | 28 | 0 | $0.411 |
| Perplexity | 4 | 80 | 0 | $0.067 |

Example: the same per-family figures as they appear in the run’s JSON (excerpt).

```json
"perFamily": {
  "Anthropic":  { "answers": 4, "citations": 67, "namedYou": 0, "costUsd": 0.357 },
  "Perplexity": { "answers": 4, "citations": 80, "namedYou": 0, "costUsd": 0.067 }
}
```

## What it tells a small brand

The models decided from 14 roundup and comparison pages more than from any vendor’s own site. Vendor pricing pages (Otterly’s, Peec’s, Profound’s) were read too, but the shortlists came from third parties. For a brand in our position that changes where the work is: not another page on our own site, but being evaluated by the people who write those roundups, on their published criteria, with no paid placement and no reciprocal reviews.

The same pattern is the usual answer to [why ChatGPT doesn’t recommend a brand](https://katman.pro/why-chatgpt-does-not-recommend-my-brand): if the pages the assistant reads don’t mention you, the answer won’t either. Fixing your own site makes you readable; it doesn’t put you on someone else’s list.

## Limits

- **Four questions, one pass, one day.** Shares move between runs; treat the order below the top three or four as noise.
- **API answers, not the apps.** The panel measured through provider APIs with retrieval on. See the [agreement study](https://katman.pro/agreement-study) for how far that matched logged-out ChatGPT.
- **Two languages.** Two English and two Turkish questions, because the site had a Turkish edition. Other markets may name other tools.

## What changed since 5 September 2026

Katman is now [an MCP server](https://katman.pro/mcp) that runs inside your AI coding tool, not a hosted audit service. `katman_visibility_run` does what this run did for any site: it asks your question set to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok through OpenRouter on your own key (about $2.40 a run on the default panel) and records who was named, recommended and cited, and which domains were read. It also writes page briefs and fix prompts for your coding tool; Katman doesn’t edit the site by itself. Katman Pro is $99 a month for up to 3 sites, with fix prompts and page briefs uncapped. Or have us do it: [Growth](https://katman.pro/done-for-you) writes 30 pages a month for you. It can’t get you onto a third party’s roundup, and nobody can promise an assistant will recommend you.

## Who this is not for

- Picking a vendor from a leaderboard: being named often by models is not the same as fitting your needs or budget.
- Market share claims: 20 answers to 4 questions on one day can’t support them.
- Anyone expecting a recommendation for Katman here: it wasn’t named in any answer.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which tools do ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini name for AI visibility tracking?

In our run of 5 September 2026 (20 answers, 5 model families), the most named were Profound (19 answers), Peec AI (18), Otterly.ai (15), AthenaHQ (13) and Ahrefs Brand Radar (12). That is one run of four questions, not a ranking of the tools.

### Why publish a result where your own product scores zero?

Because a company that measures AI visibility should show its own number, and because the zero came with a useful finding: which pages the models read before deciding. That list is the work.

### Where do AI assistants get their tool shortlists from?

In this run, mostly from third-party roundups and comparison pages, such as 2026 lists of tools that track brands in ChatGPT. Vendor pricing pages were read too, but the lists of names came from other people’s articles.

### Why are Google’s citations not in the source list?

Gemini’s 30 citations arrived through an opaque Google redirect (vertexaisearch.cloud.google.com) that doesn’t show the target domain. They are counted in the totals but can’t be attributed.

### Can I run the same measurement on my own category?

Yes. Katman’s visibility run asks your question set to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok through OpenRouter on your own key and records who was named, recommended and cited. The questions and models differ from this run, so compare like with like.

### Has Katman’s number changed since?

This page reports the run of 5 September 2026 only. We haven’t re-run this exact question set; a rerun would appear here with its own date.
