How do I show up in ChatGPT search results?
Bring your live site and the questions your buyers type into ChatGPT. Open the search path (OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt and at your CDN, text in the HTML, pages linked and known to Bing), then publish one page that answers each question in its first sentence. You get pages ChatGPT search can retrieve and link to. You don’t need a big brand: small sites get picked for specific questions.
How ChatGPT search picks pages
When ChatGPT searches the web, it rewrites the customer’s question into one or more targeted queries and may send them to partner search providers; the help page links Microsoft’s and Shopify’s privacy statements in that section (OpenAI Help, “Searching the web with ChatGPT”, read 15 Oct 2026). OpenAI also runs its own search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and says sites opted out of it won’t be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI, “Overview of OpenAI crawlers”, read 15 Oct 2026).
So showing up takes two things: the path to your pages has to be open, and one of your pages has to match the narrow query ChatGPT sends. OpenAI says ranking uses multiple factors and placement isn’t assured, so measure how often you appear, not a fixed spot.
| Gate | What must be true | Quick check |
|---|---|---|
| Crawl | OAI-SearchBot gets a 200 | robots.txt and the curl below |
| Read | The text is in the HTML | word count without JavaScript |
| Find | Pages are linked, in the sitemap, known to Bing | site:yoursite.com in Bing |
| Match | A page answers the exact question | ask ChatGPT logged out |
Open the search path
- Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. OpenAI treats search and training as independent settings, so you can keep GPTBot out and still appear in search. Changes take about 24 hours to reach ChatGPT search. An example robots.txt:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: ChatGPT-User
Allow: /
# Training is a separate decision
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /
Sitemap: https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml
- Let its IP addresses through your CDN or firewall. OpenAI publishes the ranges at
openai.com/searchbot.jsonand asks hosts to allow them. A robots.txt that says yes means nothing if the CDN answers 403. Check the status line:
curl -s -o /dev/null -D - \
-A "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; OAI-SearchBot/1.4; +https://openai.com/searchbot)" \
https://yoursite.com/ | head -n 1
HTTP/2 200 is a pass. A user-agent test only catches user-agent rules, so also run the AI crawler checker, and on Cloudflare read Cloudflare blocking AI crawlers. If ChatGPT says it can’t open your pages at all, that’s a different problem: see ChatGPT can’t access my website.
-
Put the text in the HTML. Vercel and MERJ found that none of the major AI crawlers, OAI-SearchBot included, ran JavaScript (Vercel, “The rise of the AI crawler”, 17 Dec 2024, third-party study, read 15 Oct 2026). The tests are on My vibe-coded site is invisible to ChatGPT.
-
Make the pages findable. Every public page in
sitemap.xml, linked with a real<a href>, and the site added to Bing Webmaster Tools with IndexNow for changed URLs. OpenAI doesn’t publish how much ChatGPT search relies on Bing; it only says it “sometimes partners with other search providers”. Our sample site got ChatGPT visitors on 24 Sep 2026 while Bing had 0 of its pages (own measurement). Do Bing because it’s cheap and Copilot uses it, but don’t wait for it.
Write the page that answers the question
The queries ChatGPT writes are narrower than what the customer typed. OpenAI’s own example turns a question about cancer drugs into “CCR8 immunotherapy drug development 2025”. A home page that says “the smarter way to work” matches nothing that specific.
For each question your buyers ask:
- the H1 in the buyer’s words, and the same words in the URL;
- the answer in the first one to three sentences;
- the facts a narrow query would contain (prices, limits, platforms, dates) in plain text;
- a link to it from at least one other page.
On our sample site, 59% of ChatGPT visitors landed on two such situation pages (source: the site’s own analytics, human sessions only, 528 of 1,546 sessions, 21 to 27 Sep 2026; the sample site is an AI-powered consumer web app, our own product, not a client). One site, one week: an example, not a forecast. The numbers are in the case study and the page anatomy is in the Katman method.
Appearing as a link is not the same as being the quoted source. That second step is on How to get cited by ChatGPT.
Test it the way a customer would
Your signed-in account remembers you. OpenAI says people who aren’t signed in can use web search too, so test there:
- Open a private window, logged out, and turn Search on.
- Ask your fixed list of buyer questions, word for word each time.
- Save who was named, which links were shown, and the date.
- Re-ask the same list 14 days after each change.
The full protocol is on How to check if ChatGPT recommends you.
Where Katman fits, and what it can’t do
Katman MCP runs inside your AI coding tool (Cursor, Claude Code, VS Code, Windsurf and others). katman_audit_site requests your live pages as OAI-SearchBot and the other AI bots through your CDN and counts the words visible without JavaScript. katman_page_brief turns each buyer question into a page brief. katman_indexnow sends changed URLs and lists the Bing and Search Console steps. katman_visibility_run asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok your questions on your own OpenRouter key, about $2.40 a run on the default panel. Katman Pro is $99 a month for up to 3 sites, with fix prompts and page briefs uncapped. Or have us do it: Growth writes 30 pages a month for you. More on the MCP page.
What it can’t do: Katman doesn’t edit your site by itself (your coding tool makes the changes), it can’t submit you to ChatGPT, and nobody can promise an assistant will show or recommend you.
Written by the Katman team, Rnify Limited. OpenAI, Vercel and Bing pages checked 15 October 2026.
Who this is not for
- Sites that want to stay out of AI search: disallow OAI-SearchBot instead.
- Anyone looking for paid placement or a promised position in ChatGPT: neither exists here.
- Being quoted as the source of an answer: that is the next step, covered on How to get cited by ChatGPT.
Frequently asked questions
Can I submit my site to ChatGPT search?
Not through a form we know of. OpenAI’s help page says to allow OAI-SearchBot and make sure your host or CDN lets in its published IP addresses; after that, pages are found by crawling and through the search providers ChatGPT works with.
How long until my site shows up in ChatGPT search?
Nobody can give you a date. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach its search systems, and the bot still has to crawl your pages after that. Our sample site’s first ChatGPT visitor arrived about a day and a half after launch (own analytics, 21 to 22 September 2026).
Do I need to rank on Google to appear in ChatGPT search?
No. OpenAI describes its own crawler plus partner search providers, and its help page links Microsoft’s privacy statement there. Google rankings matter most for Google’s own AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Is ranking in ChatGPT search like ranking in Google?
Not really. OpenAI says it ranks results using multiple factors and that placement isn’t assured, and the same question can return different sources on each run. Count how often you appear across a fixed question set instead of chasing a position.
Does my site have to be in Bing?
It’s worth the hour it takes, and Copilot draws on it. OpenAI doesn’t publish how much ChatGPT search leans on Bing, and our sample site got ChatGPT visitors on a day Bing had 0 of its pages (own measurement, 24 September 2026).
What should the page that shows up look like?
One page per buyer question: the H1 in the buyer’s words, the answer in the first one to three sentences, and the specific facts (prices, limits, platforms, dates) that a narrow search query would contain.
