Why doesn't ChatGPT recommend my brand? 7 reasons and the fix

The short answer: not because the model does not know you, but because your name was not on the pages it read while answering that question. These seven are what we find most often.

1. AI crawlers cannot reach your site

   If the model searches and cannot fetch you, no content helps. The usual cause is not robots.txt but a CDN's default bot protection. We scanned twenty-two sites; three were blocking at least one major AI crawler and none of them knew.

2. No page asks the buyer's question

   Models do not quote a page titled "Our services". They quote the page whose heading is the sentence the buyer typed and whose first paragraph answers it.

3. No third-party page counts you

   The big one. In our own category the models read 118 different sites, and the most-read were not competitors' own sites but roundup articles listing tools. Your site is necessary and not sufficient.

4. You are not in Bing

   Copilot reads Bing's index, and ChatGPT draws on Bing results too. It is not ChatGPT's only source: its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, reads the web as well, and lyromusic.com got 40 ChatGPT visitors a day while it had 0 pages in Bing. Missing Bing still shuts you out of Copilot.

5. Your details disagree across sources

   Three names, three categories or three addresses across three sources and the model does the safe thing: it leaves you out.

6. One language only

   A brand present in English answers can be absent in another language for the same question. Two languages is two measurements.

7. You are not measuring

   Asking ChatGPT about your own brand by name is not measurement; you supplied the name. Real measurement uses questions your name never appears in.

How to test it yourself

Write five questions in your category that never contain your brand name. Start with "best", "which" or "why", and add a situation.

Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity while signed out, so your history does not shape the answer. Note who was named, who was recommended, and the sources underneath.

Ask the same five a week later. The difference between the two tables is where you actually stand, and it costs nothing.
