Which AI SEO tools does a solo founder actually need?
Start with the $0 layer: Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools (its AI Performance report counts Copilot citations), Ahrefs Webmaster Tools and an AI crawler check. Add one paid tool only when you know which job it does: tracking answers (Rankscale, Otterly.AI, HubSpot AEO from $17 to $50 a month), rendering a JavaScript site for bots (Prerender.io from $59), or fixing the site in your editor. Prices read 15 October 2026.
What a solo founder needs, in order
Four jobs, in this order. Skipping ahead is the usual way to waste money:
- Readable: AI crawlers get a 200 and real text, not an empty JavaScript shell.
- Indexed: Google and Bing know your pages exist.
- Answering: you have pages that answer the questions customers ask assistants.
- Measured: you check, on a schedule, whether assistants name you.
Most tools sold as “AI SEO” do job 4. Jobs 1 to 3 decide whether job 4 ever shows good news. For the full tracker comparison, see AI visibility tools.
The stack: 15 tools by job and price
Monthly US dollar prices as shown on each vendor’s page, read 15 Oct 2026.
| Tool | Job | What it does | Price | Honest limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Indexed, measured | Indexing, queries; AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic counts under the “Web” search type (Google) | $0 | Google only |
| Bing Webmaster Tools | Indexed, measured | AI Performance: citations in Copilot and Bing AI summaries | $0 | Sampled; citations aren’t clicks |
| Ahrefs Webmaster Tools | Readable | Site audit (170+ issues), backlinks, web analytics | $0 for verified sites | Classic SEO, not AI answers |
| AI crawler checker | Readable | Loads your homepage as 12 AI and search bots; shows CDN blocks and robots.txt rules | Free | Homepage only; doesn’t make fixes |
| Semrush AI visibility checker | Measured | Spot check on ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode, AI Overviews | $0, 3 checks a day | A snapshot, not tracking |
| HubSpot AI Search Grader | Measured | One-time brand check on three engines | $0, form required | One-time |
| Rankscale | Measured | Credit-based tracking, page audits | Essentials $17 billed yearly | Essentials limits not listed |
| Otterly.AI | Measured | 15 prompts on ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot | Lite $29 | Gemini and Claude cost extra |
| Rank Prompt | Measured, answering | Reports on 6 engines, articles, audits | Starter $39 billed yearly | Its own page lists conflicting prices |
| HubSpot AEO | Measured | 25 prompts with recommendations | $50 | Three engines |
| GEOHATS | Answering | Writes pages, tracks on your keys | $47 one-time for 3 sites | One-click publish is WordPress; GitHub and Webflow listed as next |
| Rampify | Answering | Keyword data, specs, meta and schema via MCP | $0 for 1 project; Starter $29 | Paid plans by request |
| Prerender.io | Readable | Rendered HTML for crawlers on JavaScript sites | Starter $59 | Not needed if you already render on the server |
| LLM Pulse | Measured | 50 prompts, 5 engines | Starter €49 | Weekly at that price |
| Katman (pricing) | Readable, answering, measured | MCP in your coding tool: audits, fix prompts, page briefs, visibility runs | Katman Pro is $99 a month for up to 3 sites, with fix prompts and page briefs uncapped. | No dashboard for a team; your coding tool makes the edits |
If you build on Lovable, its server rendering, prerendering and SEO review are included on every tier, and applying fixes uses build credits (Lovable, read 15 Oct 2026). Check that before paying for rendering elsewhere.
Example: two founder budgets
Labelled as examples, not recommendations for your case.
Founder A, a React and Vite app on Netlify, built in Cursor. The crawler check shows 40 words of HTML. Budget: $0 layer, plus either Prerender.io Starter ($59) or server rendering done by the coding tool. Tracking waits until the pages render.
Founder B, a Next.js site that already renders. Bots read it fine, but no page answers “which invoice app handles VAT for freelancers”. Budget: $0 layer, Otterly.AI Lite ($29) for 15 prompts, and the rest of the month spent writing five situation pages.
Both stay under $100. Neither buys three trackers.
How to choose in 20 minutes
- Run the AI crawler checker on your site.
- Count the words curl sees on your home page and one deep page:
curl -s https://yoursite.com/ | sed 's/<[^>]*>/ /g' | wc -w. A few dozen means a rendering problem. - Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity three customer questions without your brand name.
- Missing and unreadable: fix rendering first. Readable but missing: write pages. Present: buy a tracker to watch the trend.
The longer version is in the method.
What Katman covers, and what it doesn’t
Katman runs inside Cursor, Claude Code, VS Code, Windsurf and other AI coding tools as a local MCP server. It reads your code and live pages the way AI crawlers do, hands your coding tool fix prompts with acceptance checks and page briefs, and measures ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok on your own OpenRouter key, about $2.40 a run on the default panel. See what it does.
It doesn’t edit your site by itself, doesn’t replace Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools, has no trial, and isn’t a hosted dashboard. Lovable, Bolt or Replit users sync the code to GitHub and open it in a coding tool. Nobody can promise an assistant will recommend you.
Who this is not for
- Marketing teams with several seats and client reports: look at team plans instead.
- Founders who want someone else to do the work: see GEO agency vs doing it yourself.
- Anyone looking for a promise of AI recommendations: no tool can make one.
Frequently asked questions
What should a solo founder set up before paying for any AI SEO tool?
Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools with your sitemap submitted, a check that AI crawlers get a 200 and real text, and 12 customer questions you ask assistants by hand every 14 days.
Is $100 a month enough for AI search visibility?
For one small site, usually yes for tools. The bigger cost is your time: writing the pages that answer customer questions. No tool budget replaces those pages.
Do I need an AI visibility tracker in my first month?
Not if a manual check already shows you missing. A tracker measures change over time; it’s worth more once you’ve fixed the site and published pages to measure.
Which tool shows whether Copilot cites my site?
Bing Webmaster Tools. Its AI Performance report, in public preview since 10 February 2026, counts citations in Copilot, Bing’s AI summaries and some partner integrations, at no cost.
Are AI SEO content writers worth it for a solo founder?
Only if you edit what they produce. Pages that answer a real customer situation, with your own numbers, are what assistants quote; generic articles are easy to produce and easy to ignore.
